The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 12 envisions that sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources would be achieved by 2030. The indicators of measurement of progress include, material footprint per gross domestic product (GDP) as well as domestic material consumption per GDP. The African continent is well endowed with natural resources. However, there are indications that the continent is less efficient in the management and use of its abundant natural resources. Perhaps, the situation has led to perceived resource curse in the continent.
It is on this background that the 3rd annual Circularity Africa Conference seeks to explore issues around the following sub-themes:
- Natural resource management and economic growth
- Green growth and green economy
- Material consumption, recycling and waste management
- Institutions, frameworks, and policies to support sustainable production and consumption
- Safety standard and hazardous waste treatment
- Green bonds and financial technologies
- Measuring progress in sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources
- Bioeconomy and green jobs
- Blue economy and ecosystem functions
- Resource-based assessment metrics
- Extractivism and remediation
- Resource recovery and value retention
- Renewable energy and green hydrogen
- Education for circularity
- Natural resources, climate change and environmental sustainability
- Artificial intelligence and robotics
- Agri-green management, food, nutrition and food safety
- Manufacturing and eco-industrialization
- Cities and circularity
- Food-Energy-Water nexus
- Mineral resources and beneficiation
- Value chains and international marketing mechanisms
- Decoupling and delinking from oil and gas
- Trade agreements, divestment, and illicit flows
- Gender dimensions of natural resources management
